Both bacteria and viruses can cause disease, but the text distinguishes them. Bacteria are living organisms found in places such as soil, water, and the human body. Viruses are tiny germs, about 0.02 to 0.25 microns, and are not living things; they must enter bodies to become active and make copies. Viruses can cause illnesses ranging from colds and flu to AIDS and Covid-19. Vaccines are often used to prevent their spread.
